Judge H. W. "Bucky" McMillan is married to the former Erla Gewin of Mobile. They have three sons and one daughter. He is a member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent of Birmingham.
Judge McMillan graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1972, from the University of Alabama in 1976, and from Cumberland School of Law in 1980. He attended Northwestern University School for Prosecuting Attorneys in 1981.
Judge McMillan was elected Judge on Alabama's Court of Criminal Appeals in 1984 and again in 1990. In 1996, he became the first Republican re-elected to the appellate bench with the highest percentage vote of any judicial candidate. In November, 2002, he was re-elected to his fourth term on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. Judge McMillan served as Executive Assistant Attorney General and as a Chief Prosecutor from 1980 until 1984, actively engaging in criminal trial work.
As Presiding Judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, he serves on the Standing Committee on Rules of Appellate Procedure, Standing Committee on Rules of Juvenile Procedure, as a member of the Legislative Coordinating Council, and as Alternate Chief Judge of the Judiciary. Judge McMillan currently serves on the University of Alabama President's Cabinet and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mountain Brook Athletics.
In September, 2001, he was honored by inclusion in Strathmore's 2001-2002 WHO'S WHO for demonstrating leadership and achievement in his profession. He is a past/current member of the Board of Advisors of Jones Law School; Board of Directors, Alabama YMCA Youth Legislature; Montgomery YMCA; Board of Directors, Parent Partnership; on the Board of Alabama "I Can Through Education" Foundation; Board of Directors, Alabama Youth Basketball Association; Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award Selection Committee; Alabama Anti-Drug Commission; Governor's Commission on School Violence; the Alabama Peace Officers Association; Birmingham, Montgomery County, Alabama, American Bar Associations; Committee of Indigent Defense; and the Alabama District Attorneys Association.
