  Robert Bernard  Harwood, Jr.,

Robert Bernard Harwood, Jr., was born October 17, 1939. He attended the University of the South-Sewanee in 1958-59, and completed a B.S. degree in Commerce and Business Administration at The University of Alabama in 1962. He attended The University of Alabama School of Law from 1961-63.

Judge Harwood is a member of the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association, where he served as President from 1978-79. He is a member of the Alabama and American Bar Associations; Tuscaloosa Inn of Court, where he served as President in 1991 and 1992; Farrah Law Society/Order of the Coif, where he was President in 1980 and 1981. Judge Harwood has served on a number of committees for the Alabama Supreme Court, such as the Standing Committee on Appellate Procedure; "Civil Case Management Manual" Committee; Standing Committee on "Pattern Jury Instructions-Civil"; "Batson" Committee; Task Force on Judicial Elections; Standing Committee on Rules of Conduct and Canons of Judicial Ethics; and the Standing Committee on the Alabama Rules of Civil Procedure.

Judge Harwood has also served in the Litigation Section of the Alabama State Bar; the Alabama Law Institute; the Board of Directors for the Alabama Association of Circuit Judges; American Judges Association; Judicial Administration Division of the American Bar Association; Alabama Judicial System Study Commission; and the Alabama Judicial Conference.

From 1991 to the present, Judge Harwood has been a Circuit Judge in Tuscaloosa County. He served as Deputy City Judge of Tuscaloosa from 1975-1980, as a member of the Tuscaloosa County Civil Service Board from 1969-1973; and as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Alabama from 1969-1975. From 1971-1983 and again from 1989-1999, Judge Harwood has been a Lecturer in Law and Trial Advocacy for The University of Alabama School of Law.

The Alabama Program of Continuing Legal Education of The Alabama State Bar published the "Handbook on Alabama Appellate Procedures" in 1967, which was principally authored and edited by Judge Harwood. A totally revised edition of the same publication was written by Judge Harwood in 1979 and was published by the Alabama Bar Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Judge Harwood is active in many civic organizations in Tuscaloosa. He is a member of the Exchange Club of Tuscaloosa; member of the Executive Board of The Black Warrior Council of the Boy Scouts of America from 1976-present, President of the Council in 1993, recipient of the Council's Silver Beaver Award in 1994, President of the Council's Heritage Society from 1997 to present; member of the Board of Directors of FOCUS On Senior Citizens of Tuscaloosa County; Leadership Association of The United Way of Tuscaloosa County; member of Gideons International; member of Carroll Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and member of Tuscaloosa County Cattlemen's Association and Alabama Cattlemen's Association.
